SUSTAINING SELF, SUSTAINING THE WORLD was a tremendous weekend for me. Although it can be awkward getting to know new people, I found almost everyone of the approximate 25 campers very open to getting to know me and my pursuits. In fact, I shared a lot of interests with quite a few of the progressively minded Christian women. Along our two hour hike up from Chantry Flats, we talked about subjects as diverse as seminary, activism, and Harry Potter. These open-minded and often vulnerable discussions as well as the energy of each person really added to the weekend. In fact, the face-to-face personal dynamic was carried into our larger group discussions aptly called ‘storytelling.’”
Although Frank, Jennifer, and Holly began by telling their personal stories, each participant was given the opportunity to be storytellers as well. Personally, I felt that these group gatherings were both relaxed and inspiring. In addition to these planned group discussions, Sturtevant's Camp also provided plenty opportunity to "feel like a kid" again. With a big tree swing, a tether ball, and board games, it looked like we all took advantage of this time away from adult/college life to just "chill." I know I enjoyed the games with Nancy, Scott, and Angie as well as the sunbathing with Misty Jo and Jeanie! Lastly, the hike in and out of the camp was totally cool. It's really something to be somewhere that can only be reached by walking. I think the two hours in and out really created a great buffer for me between school/work/action and a time to contemplate/just breathe!”
